I want my code back

March 10, 2011

I hate SSIS. I have many valid technical reasons to think SSIS makes for a poor data processing tool but I will lay those aside. I am philosophically, morally, spiritually, and intellectually opposed to the very idea of SSIS. Programming is fun. There are interesting problems to solve and you often get to define the rules of your own little world. Annoyances are there (unicode) like with anything but in general writing code, solving hard problems, and enabling people to do things they couldn’t do before is just fun. SSIS is none of these things. When I open it I flinch a little like an abused kid who realizes his attacker just walked into the room. Programmers use boxes and arrows to communicate abstract ideas. Some nut job thought this would be a great way to actually program – moving little boxes and arrows around on the screen. It is an abstraction too far. The poetry of code should be used to actually build the world. SSIS just makes me want to hurl kittens. SSIS was initially picked up because it would “save time” — complete and utter bullshit that was. SSIS might save time for really simple things but even data processing tasks with a trivial amount of complexity turn into a hair pulling, expletive filled journey into a hell filled with malfunctioning, flashing boxes. Just fuck it all. I want my code back. I’ll even settle for c# or java over this complete waste of my life; hell I would even say good things about those languages. I’ve looked into the heart of evil and I am not sure I can hold it together. SSIS needs to die.
